ChatGPT's Instant Checkout feature is one of the more significant developments in AI commerce. Rather than directing users to merchant websites, ChatGPT lets users complete purchases in-conversation. For merchants, this is both opportunity (capturing transactions you'd never have seen) and disruption (some traffic that would have come to your store now stays in ChatGPT).
This guide covers what's required to participate.
What ChatGPT Instant Checkout actually does
The user flow:
- User asks ChatGPT for a product recommendation
- ChatGPT identifies eligible merchants and products
- User says "buy that"
- ChatGPT presents purchase confirmation in chat (price, shipping, total)
- User confirms with one tap (Apple Pay, Google Pay, stored card)
- Order placed, confirmation shown in chat
- Merchant receives order through normal Shopify order flow
The buyer never visits your storefront. Order processes normally on your end.
Eligibility requirements (mid-2026)
OpenAI's current eligibility:
- Shopify Plus merchant (smaller plans being added gradually)
- Eligible product categories (excludes regulated categories: alcohol, supplements, CBD, weapons, prescription)
- Compliance with OpenAI's merchant policies
- Operational readiness (inventory accuracy, fulfillment within stated times)
Categories not yet eligible:
- Restricted goods (alcohol, weapons, etc.)
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Heavy items requiring shipping calculation
- B2B products
Technical requirements
For Shopify Plus stores in eligible categories:
Catalog connectivity. Your Shopify catalog connected to ChatGPT's commerce layer (handled by Shopify's integration).
Inventory accuracy. Real-time inventory feeds. Out-of-stock items can't be sold via Instant Checkout.
Standard checkout flow. Some custom checkouts don't work with Instant Checkout. Verify standard Shopify checkout.
Customer service capability. Inbound customer service for orders placed via Instant Checkout (you don't get to interact with the buyer pre-purchase).
Refund and return process. Standard Shopify processes work; just confirm they handle Instant Checkout orders cleanly.

For eligible Shopify Plus merchants:
- Apply through Shopify's ChatGPT commerce program
- OpenAI reviews merchant eligibility
- Approved merchants connect catalog
- Test transactions
- Live availability to ChatGPT users
Approval timing varies — some merchants approved within days, others weeks.
What changes for your business
Customer experience changes:
- Some customers never see your branded experience
- Cross-sell and upsell happen in-chat (you don't control)
- Customer service is post-purchase only
- Brand-building happens before, not during, transaction
Operational changes:
- Higher inventory accuracy requirement

ChatGPT may show your products alongside competitors when responding to category queries. Your pricing transparency matters:
- Match list price to your storefront
- Don't have hidden fees
- Free shipping or clearly stated shipping costs
Surprises in chat erode trust.
Common mistakes
Treating Instant Checkout as just another channel. It changes your relationship with buyers; plan accordingly.
Not investing in AI visibility. Without AI recommending you, Instant Checkout doesn't help.
Inventory neglect. Showing in stock when out of stock breaks trust.
Ignoring post-purchase touchpoints. Without these, you have transactional buyers without LTV.
A real merchant example
A skincare brand on Shopify Plus joined the Instant Checkout program in early 2026:
- Initial month: 4% of orders via Instant Checkout
- Three months: 8% of orders
- Six months: 12% of orders
- Notable: 30% of Instant Checkout customers had no prior interaction with brand
