You can sell downloads through Shopify, but the product page and payment are only part of the job. You also need a reliable way to deliver the right file, explain its permitted use, and help a customer who cannot access it. Start with one complete purchase journey before building a large catalog.
Choose the delivery model before the app
| What you sell | Customer needs | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PDF workbook | A readable download | File size, device compatibility, replacement access |
| Design template | Files plus instructions | Required software, fonts, version, license |
| Video lessons | A usable viewing experience | Streaming, captions, access controls, progress tracking |
| Software license | A valid entitlement | Key generation, activation, updates, support |
| Recurring library | Continuing access | Billing, cancellation, access expiration, content schedule |
A file delivery app does not automatically provide a course platform or software licensing system. Write down the requirements that are essential on day one. Our first-store digital app stack helps separate delivery from optional additions.
Create a product that describes the actual purchase
Use an exact title and show a useful preview. List the files included, supported software versions, language, and whether future updates are included. State who the resource is intended for and what it does not contain. A spreadsheet template should explain whether macros or a paid software subscription are required.
Keep a master record for each product: SKU, current file version, license text, preview image, delivery method, and support instructions. When replacing a file, record whether existing purchasers should receive the update. A renamed file can otherwise make an old support conversation surprisingly difficult to resolve.
Configure shipping and file delivery separately
Shopify's digital product setup instructions explain how to deactivate the physical-product shipping setting and connect a delivery app. Its current documentation identifies Shopify's free Digital Products app as one option. Confirm the app's current limits and delivery settings against your own requirements.
Removing shipping does not attach a file, grant a license, or configure access. Complete and test those steps separately. For a catalog that includes merchandise as well, use our mixed physical and digital product guide.
Build the economics without assuming zero costs
There is no parcel to mail for a download, but payment processing, app usage, support, content maintenance, refunds, and customer acquisition can still cost money. Separate the one-time creation investment from ongoing expenses.
Here is a hypothetical workbook order, not a Shopify quote:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Selling price | $24.00 |
| Payment fee assumption | −$1.02 |
| Delivery cost allowance | −$0.50 |
| Support and refund allowance | −$2.00 |
| Acquisition allowance | −$5.00 |
| Contribution before fixed costs and tax | $15.48 |
At $120 in monthly fixed costs, eight such orders cover those modeled costs. This does not recover the original creation investment or pay for unrecorded labor. Use the startup cost calculator with your own quotes and realistic support allowance.
Test access, recovery, and cancellation
Use Shopify's test order guidance and your delivery app's instructions. Test a purchase on mobile, inspect the confirmation, open the download as a customer, and check that the file works. Test incorrect addresses and replacement access through your documented support process, without exposing another customer's purchase.
For subscriptions, test what happens when access ends. For refunds, check the app's access-revocation behavior rather than assuming a refund deletes downloaded files. State license terms clearly; download limits cannot guarantee that files will never be shared.
Before launch, review applicable tax settings and customer policies for your products and markets. A digital label does not settle those obligations. Complete the launch checklist, then open only the catalog you can deliver and support consistently.
Choose the next practical step
Before paying annually, review the billing cash-flow comparison. If the offer is still only one or two downloads, compare a storefront and payment links before building a larger operation.
